Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions (No Willpower Required)

New Years Eve

How many times have you purchased a gym membership in January only to find that by February, your gym pass is mere decoration on your already cluttered keychain?

You don’t need us to tell you that New Year’s resolutions rarely stick.

The most common resolutions are exactly the ones you might expect: drink less alcohol, exercise more, lose weight, get a better job, quit smoking, save money, stress less. If following them were fun or easy, they wouldn’t show up on your list year after disgruntled year.

But there’s a secret you didn’t know last year: willpower won’t work.

“The reason we tend to have the same resolutions every year is that we rely too heavily on willpower,” says Heidi Grant Halverson, Ph.D., social psychologist and author of “Succeed: How We Can Reach Our Goals.” “Somehow this is the year we’ll have the self-control not to eat sweets or to quit smoking. Willpower, even when you have a lot of it, is a fickle friend. It ebbs and flows throughout the day and is very much a limited resource.”

By learning these simple tricks to take willpower out of the equation, you can check those ever-elusive goals off your to-do list once and for all.

Read Treat Yourself! 10 Things You Should Do For Yourself This Holiday Season

Start small. Optimism is great, but a too-ambitious goal will be in the trash by mid-January. “You need to ease into your resolutions,” says YouBeauty Psychology Advisor Art Markman, Ph.D., author of “Smart Thinking.” “If you’ve never exercised before, you probably shouldn’t plan on running a marathon by the summer.” Each goal you tackle should feel manageable.

Halverson recommends breaking a goal down into bite-size pieces and tackling them one at a time. “If you want to eat better, start by eliminating one thing from your diet,” she says. “Willpower is like a muscle that grows with use, so you’ll find that as you’re doing it, it gets easier and easier—it becomes a new habit.” When you feel like you’ve got that down pat, start in on the next step.

Be specific. When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, the English teachers’ mantra holds true: specific is terrific. “People who want to lose weight will say, ‘I plan to eat less and exercise more,’” says Halverson. “That’s really a terrible plan. What are you going to eat less of? How much less? If you’re going to work out more, how much more?”

When you set a goal, focus on how you plan to achieve it. Instead of saying “I’ll exercise more,” say, “I will go to the gym near my office on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at six o’clock.” One study found that people who planned the specific days and times they’d exercise each week were three times more likely to actually stick to the goal. At the end of the study, 32 percent of the people who didn’t make a plan were still exercising versus 91 percent of the people who did.

What’s Your Nightly Skin Ritual? Do You Have One?

What’s Your Nightly Skin Ritual? Do You Have One?

Do you take care of your skin at night, or are you a bit of a slacker like me?

-April Daniels Hussar, sponsored by Simple Skincare

skin care

I confess — the ideal nightly skin ritual I have in my head does not always (often?) match up with what happens in reality.

My ambition: remove my eye makeup (I usually wear at least mascara), gently cleanse my face and neck, pat my skin, and then follow up with a rich night cream and some eye cream for good measure. Doesn’t sound too taxing, right?

Too often a reality: I conk out, exhausted from the day, on the couch trying to watch a movie with my husband, or in my daughter’s bed halfway through trying to read her a story. I manage to wake up long enough to drag myself to the bathroom where I peel out my contacts and brush my teeth, then I sleepwalk into my own bed. In the morning, when I look in the bathroom mirror, a very disheveled raccoon looks back at me!

The thing is — this sort of activity doesn’t seem so bad when you’re a college girl traipsing around until the wee hours of the morning. Everything, including your skin, is ever so much more resilient at that age, no? Alas, fast-forward a few (a lot) (is a decade a lot?) (yes) of years … and skipping too many nights of cleansing and skin care really takes its toll. Ug, especially in the winter!

One thing that does help inspire me to stick with a nightly routine are products that I like. I’ve been using the Simple Skincare line for about a month now — religiously in the morning, somewhat religiously in the evening — and I really like them, and the way they make my sensitive skin look and feel. When I see results, then I’m more likely to stick with it — I mean really, if I can make it in the bathroom to brush my teeth, another three minutes isn’t going to kill me, right? RIGHT?!

Read How Does Stress Affect your Skin — And Your Confidence?

I love the Simple Kind to Skin Vital Vitamin Night Cream — it’s rich and smooth without being too oily, and it’s affordable enough that I feel like I’m not throwing away my daughter’s college education by including my neck in the fun. (You do take care of the skin on your neck, right?! I have Nora Ephron to thank for my neck-skin-vigilance!)

I’m also a big fan of their Simple Kind to Skin Moisturizing Facial Wash. I am extremely picky — like, crazy person picky — about facial washes. I hate when they leave anything on your skin, but I also hate when they make your skin feel stripped and dry. But I want them to actually clean my skin so I can peer up close at it and not feel like it’s still secretly grimy from the day. I am the Goldilocks of facial washes!

And for those nights that I’m really just too freaking tired to wait for the water to heat up (I mean, it’s like at least 30 whole seconds!), or I’m a big fan of the Simple Kind to Skin Cleansing Facial Wipes. They do a good job taking off eye makeup too by cleansing, refreshing and nourishing skin. Swish, wipe, voila.

I do know that I need to be better about sticking to my nightly routine. I shall strive!

What about you? Do you have a nightly routine? What is it? Do you ever go to sleep with your makeup on, like me?

Five Simple Tips for Cold and Flu Season

We’ve got money saving tips for dry, cracked hands, sore throats, chapped lips and more!

-Tracy Buelow

Five Simple Tips for Cold and Flu Season

Cough, body aches, sore throat, runny nose– yes, it’s that time of year again. Cold and flu season is here, and after a long holiday season full of travel and excess food, our immune systems are vulnerable. Every year, more than 62 million cases of the common cold are reported in the U.S., according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and as many as 24 million people report suffering from a sore nose.

While there are steps you can take to alleviate the discomfort associated with a cold and flu—drink plenty of hot liquids, keep facial tissues on hand at all times and get plenty of rest. Frequently we find ourselves jaded by the newest remedies or we spend extensive amounts of money on prescriptions that run out before we know it. When it comes to the quickly onset cold or flu, we need to go back to the basics for a quick fix. At the first sign of a cold or flu this season, turn to the tips below to help relieve your symptoms and save you time and money too!

1. Sore, scratchy throat?

A sore throat can stop you in your tracks, but luckily there are simple home remedies to ease the discomfort. Gargling with a mix of water and salt can help reduce swelling and relieve the discomfort of a sore throat. Using a humidifier at night will help soothe swollen passages and keep the soreness at bay. At work, keep a box of herbal tea at your desk to help coat your raw throat and get you through the day. Don’t have throat lozenges on hand? Pop hard candy. The candy encourages the flow of saliva and will help lubricate your throat and ease the pain.

2. Serious case of chapped lips?

Provide some relief from harsh winds and dry air by applying petroleum jelly to your lips at night. One simple application before you go to sleep every night will keep your lips moisturized throughout the day. Lip balm, moisturizer or any unscented medicated lotion will work just as well. Staying hydrated is also key: drinking eight glasses of water every day will help keep your body and lips hydrated, and will help prevent dry, chapped lips. When outdoors, protect your lips from harsh weather and wind by covering them up with a scarf.

3. Suffering from a sore, runny nose?

Keep facial tissue on hand at all times. Germs spread easily, and nobody wants to share a cold. According to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, colds are often spread through coughs and sneezes so it’s recommended that you cover your nose and mouth with a tissue. Using Kleenex brand facial tissue, the only tissue with Sneeze Shield technology in all of their tissues, can help keep stuff off hands and in the tissue. If you know someone who’s coming down with a cold, you can even send a Kleenex brand Share Pack for free online for a limited time while supplies last. Everyone who sends a Share Pack will receive a free sample of new Kleenex Cool Touch tissue, the only tissue that soothes a sore nose on contact, and they can track the chain of sharing they’ve inspired via an interactive map.

4. Experiencing dry, cracked hands?

To avoid painful, dry and cracked hands prevalent during the winter months, make sure a bottle of hand relief or moisturizer becomes a staple accessory. You can also use at home remedies, such as an olive oil bath or petroleum jelly, to prevent dry hands. For the olive oil bath, fill a bowl with water and about 4 tablespoons of olive oil, soak your hands for 10 minutes and rinse. For the petroleum jelly, simply cover your hands with petroleum jelly and a pair of gloves before bedtime. Voila!

5.Suffering from a stiff neck?

Relax! One of the easiest ways to ease a stiff neck is to lie down and relax the muscles. You can also release tension naturally by keeping pure tea tree oil on hand. Dab a dime-sized amount of tea tree oil on the affected area and massage into the skin. You can also use ice to numb the pain and decrease inflammation or heat to soothe the area and increase circulation. Whether you use ice or heat, be sure to use them for 10 minute increments at a time. Too much of either can cause additional pain.

Tell us: do you have tips or remedies you use when you’re sick with a cold?

How to Create a Stellar Work Wardrobe on a Budget

We’ve got expert career clothing tips and tricks from NBC’s Jill Martin, HSN’s Lauren Wilner and the bra queen: Jene Luciani!

-PJ Gach

This series is brought to you by TurboTax Federal Free Edition.

When it comes to creating or expanding your work wardrobe, it’s easy to get stumped. Career wear can be considered “boring.” We’d rather spend money on fun items like those killer shoes at the mall. But, and this is a big but, having a killer work wardrobe can do a lot for you.

Whether it’s your first job, you’re returning to work after an absence, or just want to get your wardrobe in gear, we’ve got great advice from gotten three well-respected style experts who shared their knowledge on how to create a great work wardrobe without spending a ton of money.

1. Focus on the Essentials

Lauren Wilner, HSN’s Fashion Director says, “I would stick with the essentials whenever building any type of wardrobe. I hate to call them basics, but more essential pieces that you can always build on season after season and spice up with accessories.”

Jill Martin, style expert, Today Show frequent style contributor, and author of I Have Nothing to Wear states, “A trench is a must—every woman should have one!” She also says every woman needs a crisp white button-down shirt and a dress that can be thrown on and always looks great for last-minute party invites.”

The experts also agree that you should invest on a pair of well-fitting black pants, a blazer (preferably in a color that will coordinate with the skirt and pants), and a classic pencil skirt.

2. Buy for Your Work Environment

If it’s your first job or you’re returning to work, don’t forget to read the employee manual. Jene Luciani, style expert and author of the Bra Book, says, “Developing a work wardrobe definitely depends on your line of work. If you are in a ‘creative’ industry, you can get away with a lot more, style-wise. If more conservative, the dress will reflect that. You should also always find out if there are any ‘rules’ at your office. Big corporations often have them, such as suits for guys and hose for women. When in doubt, ask! And when starting a new job, pay attention to what other employees are wearing.”

Lauren concurs: “It all depends on where you work but for the most part, the work force is getting more and more open with the term ‘business attire’.”

3. Invest in Your Undies!

While you may not have a lot of money to splurge on lingerie, properly fitting bras, undies and even shape wear will make everything look and fit better. Lauren says, “Nothing is more unflattering than you tugging at your undergarments all day.”

Jene agrees: “You want to look put together no matter what. Get a good everyday bra that looks smooth under your blouses and fits properly, some seamless underpants and a pair of bike-short style shape wear.”

4. Don’t Buy Into Label Hype

Jene has great advice on what type of items to look for and what to steer clear of: “Stay away from labels or anything too status-y or expensive looking… you want to start with a clean slate and let them see you for YOU and not anything else.”

5. Work with Color

Whether you’re working with an all black wardrobe or a more mixed closet, you can add color to your essentials. Jill says, “I wouldn’t buy a dress that looks on the cheaper side in a bright color — that is easier to spot!. The trick is to work with accessories. A scarf; great statement jewelry; a bright top is the way to go.” She says cotton is always safe!

Jene agrees: “You can go with a bold color like red, but better as an accent or to relegate to one item of clothing, not more than one. I like a nice royal blue; it’s elegant and bold yet still understated. Think Kate Middleton.”

6. Take Care of Your Wardrobe

With so many discount and fast fashion stores, it’seasy to fill up your wardrobe with bargains (and you should!). But, no matter where you bought it, keep care of it. As Jene reminds us, “Tailoring and dry cleaning is key – you can shop at the Gap but if you spend an additional $10 on your seamstress and always press/dry clean, it will look like you bought it at Neiman Marcus.”

7. Know When to Spurge

There are a few items that you should spend a little money on though. All the experts agree to spend money on a good bag, preferably one big enough to carry everything you need for work. If you buy a high quality leather bag and take care of it, it will last quite a few years. Lauren suggest that when you’re shopping for the bag, “Look for one with pockets, inserts, closures and handles that are long enough to go on your shoulder but can also be carried in the nook of your arm.”

Now, some people say that you should also spend a lot of money on a pair of classic pumps. Jene thinks you don’t have to live on ramen for shoes, but she advises, “Even if they aren’t the most expensive pair, they should look clean and not scuffed. Usually they should be closed toed – in most office settings, toe cleavage is a no-no (as is boob cleavage!).”

The items on Jill’s splurge list are items that’ll also do well when you’re not in the office, “I think you splurge on a great, classic cashmere sweater and a beautiful pair of ballet flats so even in your casual-life you are looking chic.”

Keep in mind though — these pieces can often be found at places like Marshall’s and TJ Maxx for much less than in a department store!

8. Know When to Scrimp!

So what can you pay less for? Everyone agrees to NOT spend a lot of money on accessories.

Lauren says, “With anything super trendy, I don’t think you need to invest in a $1000 necklace but instead pick and choose where to spend your money.”

Jill goes on to explain, “I think statement jewelry is very easy to find at stores like H&M, Forever 21, and even department stores have great pieces that are inexpensive. My rule is if you are not buying real diamonds, pearls or stones, there is no reason to break the bank over a trendy piece. You can definitely find exquisite pieces (flea market and vintage stores are also amazing!) you just have to be on the hunt and look around. “

skimp careet

Jene says you can also scrimp on tops: “You can get washed silk tops for very reasonable prices at almost any mall store. They go great with slacks or a skirt. Also don’t bother with too many accessories (in the office). A watch and your wedding ring and simple stud earrings is sufficient. Anything else is distracting in an office environment!”

So there you have it. When you’re building your career style, spend money on items that will do double duty like a blazer, a pair of well-fitting pair of pants, a smartly tailored white shirt, a classic styled skirt and a bag. Then, you can pinch your pennies and pick up cute, trendy accessories to add some personality to your work wear — and as long as you keep your shoes clean, you don’t have to spend a ton of money on them.

Now go have fun and shop!

5 Steps To Get Bikini Ready!

These easy moves will have you well on you way to having the best butt of your life by summer. Who says you can’t be bikini perfect by March?

-Jenny Beres

Kate Hudson: Did She or Didn't She?

During a six year stint living in Florida, I was fortunate enough to have a personal trainer as a best friend. He taught a 5 a.m. class at the local club- a class he dubbed “Booty Camp.” Sound harmless? The first time I ever took this class, I couldn’t sit down on the toilet for a week. This class worked- but I thought there was an easier way to do this (like in private) where I didn’t feel the performance pressure. Here are some of the best moves (and ones just like it) for a quick workout that works. Call me a masochist, but with this kind of pay off, you might even dig the pain.

 1. Squats

One of Kate Hudson’s favorite moves for beautiful summer legs and booty. This is no surprise considering this is the Holy Grail move for a butt you can bounce a quarter off of. Stand with feet shoulder width apart (facing a mirror if you can). Start off without weights, or a black padded bar of 8-10 pounds rested across your shoulders. Slowly bend your knees- making sure not to go over the toes, (injury alert) keep your back straight, and butt sticking out. Squat as low as you can go- the lower the squat the more the glutes are working! Slowly return to starting position, and then repeat. This move tones glutes, quads, hamstrings. Repeat 10-12 times in 3 to 4 sets. Hold the last squat of the last set for ten seconds- working your way up to 30. Warning, it will burn in a very good way.

Read Win It: QVC’s Beautiful You Cosmetics Worth $500!

2. Lunges

This is the best complement to the squat. Split legs- one forward, one behind, keeping the front leg bent (again, avoid the knee over the toe thing) while the back leg is kept straight. You can do this with hands on your hips to start- and once you work up to it, add the weights at your side. Slowly lower yourself down, keeping your back leg straight, until your back knee is almost touching the ground. Keep all the weight in your heels, slowly rise to starting position. Try 8-12 reps in sets of three.

3. Walking lunge

This is very similar to number two, except it really gets your heart pumping! While you’re busy toning that soon-to-be-fab behind of yours, you are also getting some cardio. Start in the same position as the stationary lunge, except instead of returning to starting position, bring both legs together and follow with a lunge from the opposite leg, moving forward with a walk. Try three sets of of 12 reps. To start, try this exercise without weights. Once you’ve gotten the form down, add hand weights or a medicine ball. When using the medicine ball hold it out in front of your chest to work that core, arms and shoulders at the same time time!

What will these friends think of you? And exactly how much of an influence do they have on your new man?

Read Have Fun Being Single!

When you’re really in love with each other, you see that person through rose-tinted glasses. “This has a lot to do with the influence of a potent neurochemical called dopamine that causes you to focus wholeheartedly on the person you’re in love with,” explains sex therapist and founder of Good In Bed, Ian Kerner. “You tend to wear blinders when it comes to other people’s thoughts and feelings.” This is where the phrase “love is blind” comes from. Things about that person that may be annoying to others – or are warning signs – are usually ignored. People have often cast aside friends and family to pursue love.

5 Reasons Why He Won’t Marry You

You’re getting tired of him waiting to be his wife, maybe he’s scared to pop the question?

-Marcelina Hardy

What Makes a Marriage Work?

You’ve been his girlfriend long enough and you’re ready to become his wife. The only problem is that he won’t ask you to marry him. Understanding why he won’t gets under your skin as much as you asking him why he won’t gets under his.

When you’re ready to take this next step in the relationship but he seems to take his old sweet time in the process, several reasons may be holding him back. The good news is that you can do something about it, so not all hope is lost.

Reason Number 1: Commitment Phobia

While he was okay with calling you his girlfriend, taking it to the next level of marriage is a whole other story for him. With marriage, it’s forever, and he may be scared of that. It’s the final commitment.

Does it mean he doesn’t love you enough to know he wants to be with you forever? Probably not. He’s just afraid that he may change his mind someday.

Have you thought about that yourself? That maybe someday you may wake up and think, “Gosh, I don’t like him anymore, I’ve made a mistake.

Want to know a secret though? It does happen. Couples work through it all the time because they know that at one time their love for each other was strong. Through commitment and rebuilding their marriage, their love reappears in a new but familiar way.

So how do you help your man with this issue? Talk to him. Ask him how he is feeling and what part of marriage and the commitment of it scares him. Is it this exact situation that makes him hesitate? Show him that you are committed to the love you share and with that commitment and devotion to each other, those times will be overcome.

Reason Number  2: Loss of Independence

Many men who are afraid of making the leap towards matrimony have an inaccurate image of marriage. They pick it up either from television, their parents or from friends’ parents. They’ve seen husbands’ being controlled by their wives and looking depressed because of it.

As you know, no one wants to be in a marriage where one person controls the other. Marriage is a partnership and couples should always remember that when they make that step into it.

You can help your boyfriend by telling him some of your dreams and hopes of what you believe marriage will be like with him. Nothing pushy here but just for the fun of it will get him thinking about it too and will help him see that you may not be like wives that he has witnessed in the past.

Read 5 Reasons Why Your Guy Won’t Commit

Reason Number 3: Afraid of Divorce

With the divorce rate in the United States at 50% and increasing, this fear is rational. He’s probably experienced divorce in his life and knows how devastating it is for everyone involved.

Communication is important in a healthy relationship. Whenever there is anything you believe is upsetting your boyfriend it’s good to talk it out with him.

Talk to him about what part of divorce bothers him. Does he feel that his parents or people in general don’t give working on marriage enough of a shot before throwing in the towel? Does he believe that divorce is inevitable in marriage? It’s important to talk to him to see what he believes about divorce and marriage so you know if he even plans to get married someday.

If he doesn’t plan to get married, this is something you’ll have to then cope with and decide if you want to move on from in your life.

Reason Number 4: Not Ready

People develop essential qualities to make them ready for the stage of marriage at different times. You may have developed all those qualities within a year, while it may take two or three for him. Note that it often takes men longer than women to reach the commitment level for marriage.

Knowing what to do with this situation is difficult. Waiting for someone who may or may not want to marry you can seem like a gamble. Such is the game of love though. You’ll need to decide if he is worth the wait.

After you are ready to marry him, you’ll have to look out for the signs that you arne’t wasting your time. You’ll have to ask if he has intentions on marrying, then as you move further into the relationship, if he can see marrying you someday and then further along if he wants to marry you. If he doesn’t say a word about marriage and just ignores your mentions of it, you may want to consider ending the relationship.

Reason  Number 5: He Just Doesn’t Want To

He’s fine with things as they are right now and he doesn’t want that to change. He believes that marriage will change everything and he is not willing to do that. He knows that you won’t stay with him if he tells you that , so when you ask him about it, he just smiles and says, “Oh, it’ll be when you least expect it.” yet that’s been the case for the last two years.

It’s time for the ultimatum. You can either pop the question yourself or just say, “We either get engaged now or we break up.”

Just be prepared for what happens next. Either this could be the end of your relationship or it could push him to marry you because he really doesn’t want to lose you. What you will get is an answer to the limbo you’ve been in for way too long.

How to Score a Date By Valentine’s Day

Follow these four tips to make sure you have plans for February 14th.

-Faye Brennan

10 Valentine's Day Date Ideas That Aren't Cheesy

Yes, you’re single, but you’re not about to dress in all black and pout your way through Valentine’s Day. You can get a date for February 14th if you really want to – you’re young, smart, sexy and desirable… A total Betty.

And all Bettys need to do to have plans for Valentine’s Day is to follow the advice of Whitney Casey, a relationship expert for Match.com and author of The Man Plan: Drive Men Wild… Not Away. Here, she shares four foolproof ways to meet your 2011 Valentine.

Read The Last Single Lady

1. Spread the word.
Let everyone know—loud and clear—that you’re looking for a plus one for a Valentine’s Day dinner. “Your friends, family and coworkers know you, and they know other people,” says Casey. “By empowering your network to become your personal matchmaker, you may very well find your cupid.” Think of your friends as your personal love pimps and make them work for you!

2. Be a sport.
If you’re going to find a guy quickly, you need to go where they are, which means joining a co-ed sports team or league. “Kickball, dodgeball, really ANYTHING with balls will work,” Casey stresses. “Trust me, the ratio of men to chicks will be in your favor. All that sweaty activity elevates the hormones, sending out unmistakable signals.” Don’t forget to play rough… there’ll be more opportunities for physical fouls.

3. Beat your competition.
You can make fun of it all you want in front of your friends, but online dating works. In today’s world, one in five relationships begin online, and nothing says that “one” can’t be you. As Casey says, “Joining an online dating site like Match.com or Chemistry.com is a no-brainer. Not only does it give you instant access to thousands of singles, but you can also check out your competition so you’re in the know as you hunt for your next John Doe.” In other words, log on to see who else is out there. Once you see the competition (but more likely, lack thereof), your confidence will skyrocket, and sending out those intro messages will seem ridiculously easy. The best part? Your friends never have to know!

4. Man up.
Do you really want someone to hang out with on Valentine’s Day? Then it’s time to grow a pair and leave your comfort zone. Yes, we’re talking about that stud muffin in your marathon training group. And yes, you need to make the first move. “If there’s someone you’ve had your eye on for a while – a mysterious guy at work or someone you bump into regularly at the grocery store – take a chance and ask him out,” advises Casey. “You’ll never know unless you take the first step!”

And, you’ll never have a date for Valentine’s Day if you waste the next week thinking, “Woe is me and my single girl status!” So, try out these four strategies and see where they lead. At the very least, you may score a date for February 15th (we know how some guys get spooked by all the candy hearts and flowers).

Tell us: Have you used any of these strategies to meet a guy? Did they work?

The Day My Friend Endured a Tragic Blow

Art Jr.In the spring of 2012, I was meeting with an old friend/colleague, Art, at his Capitol Hill office in Washington, DC. As we were making our way back from London to California, I was excited to introduce him to my twin boys (then 7 years old).  I was stunned and irritated when I arrived at the office and learned that Art was not coming into work that day.  So, I just carried on with my boys and another congressional staffer, who took us on a tour of the Capitol and the floor of the House of Representatives – a very cool experience for my boys.

When I got back to California, I called up my friend, and asked, “What the heck… where were you?”  My friend responded in tears and said, “Deborah, it is Art Jr… he is not okay.”  Art Jr. is the son of my friend and was soon to celebrate his one-year-old birthday.

I said, “What do you mean… what is going on?”

Art Jr.

He responded, “Olga [his wife] was feeding Art Jr. one day, and his head just fell into his chest, and she couldn’t get him to hold his head up.”

It was from that day forward that my friend, his wife, and their sweet little boy would never be the same.

Doctors could not diagnosed Art Jr.’s debilitating illness for months and things declined quickly.  Not only was it becoming apparent that Art Jr. no longer had any muscular control, it was starting to affect his vital organs, such as his lungs.  Art Jr. would no longer be able to breathe on his own.

The 6 Most Important Tips for Teaching Your Kids How to Be Self-Sufficient

When it comes to raising children to be independent, what’s most important?

-April Daniels Hussar

kids independence

A topic I covered recently (our most dreaded household chores and how to make them not so dreadful), got me thinking about kids — not just about how to enlist them into helping with housework (mwahahaha), but of how our child’s role in the home can really affect his or her own sense of self sufficiency. And THAT got me thinking about the bigger notion of instilling a sense of being able to rely on oneself in our kids — how can we, as parents, make sure we’re doing that?

Does my kid feel capable – not just in the family unit, but out in the world?” That’s how my friend Madeleine St Jacques, a parenting coach and mom to Lola, age 10, describes self-sufficiency, and I think it’s a great definition. How can we make sure that we raise our kids to be able to head into the world, if not completely fearlessly, then at least confidently? I put the question to my own network, and here are the six things that came up again and again:

1. Let children make mistakes!
My friend Geri, a mom of two in Connecticut, says: “Letting kids do things themselves and allowing them to make mistakes is key in teaching them to be more self sufficient,” she says. Geri addsthat in the art class she takes with her toddler son, “It is funny to see how moms take over the projects for their kids instead of allowing them to make a mess.”

My friend Jodi agrees — they key, she feels, is “giving them enough rope to make a mistake without hanging themselves but still feeling the consequences.” This is especially true with school work, she says. “As of third grade I have little to no involvement with school work and assignments,” she says of her two daughters (one is in fourth grade, the other in middle school). “They have both had no issues and done very well. They know they are responsible for their work!”

2. Give kids chores and responsibilities around the house.
So many people I talked with agreed this is one of the most important aspects to raising a self-sufficient person.

But it’s important to make sure you…

3. Set kids up for success with those responsibilities.
When it comes to helping keep the house tidy, tasks that we’ve done as adults for a zillion years seem straightforward, but a kid might not feel that way. If your child is easily overwhelmed, Madeleine says, “Breaking down tasks — even ones we think aren’t such a big deal — into small steps has been key for us.” So if a bedroom has gotten out of control, it’s easier to tell your kid to “clean it up” if you help her brainstorm the steps that need to go into achieving a tidy room: Pick up all the clothes off the floor, then sort the clothes into dirty and clean, then pick up the books and toys, etc…

Daily or weekly chores can be made more manageable with the right tools. For example, if you want to start getting an older child to help you with the laundry, those single-use detergent pods are a great way to take the mess and stress out of measuring the soap.

4. Respect who they are and what they do.
Not all kids are the same. Denise D’Ecclessis is the founder of the Love for Autism Facebook community She shares that she takes a different approach with her two boys, Angelo, 19, and Vincent, 13, who is on the autism spectrum. “I have learned about Vincent through the years that he is capable of more than he lets on to be – of course being a non-verbal child, he is not going to tell me,” she says, adding that she has to take a more relaxed approach with him, and “expect mistakes but be consistent.” Her older son Angelo has been more independent for a long time: “He had to grow up pretty quick, being the sibling of a special needs brother; he learned early on to be self-sufficient.”

But with both of her boys, Denise says, teaching independence starts with respect. “Your children have to respect you and themselves in order to see a purpose in independence,” she says, adding that rewarding positive behavior is also important. “They have to feel like they play an important role in the family and that they are appreciated for all their contributions,” she says.

Last Minute Shape Up Tips For Valentine’s Day!

Yes, you can feel and look great in time for Valentines Day!

New Workout to Try: Angie Lee's Knockout Body Workout

Sure, every woman wants to look irresistible on Valentines Day. But is it possible to look your best if you are not feeling your best?  One’s derriere can look firm, with a little junk in the trunk, or it can look like all you have been doing is eating junk. With this big romantic day approaching, there is still time to incorporate some exercises in to your routine that will have you feeling fit and fabulous! You can have toned shoulders and arms to compliment that dress or cute top, a waistline providing a beautiful silhouette to any garment, and sexy legs to help you strut your stuff all evening long. Here are four exercises that will help you train and develop muscles in the upper and lower body.

Read Easy Ways To Perfect Your Posture

Squat: Squats are an excellent exercise to target the quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings and core muscles. Begin with feet shoulder width apart. To start the movement, first shift your weight back onto the heels and push the hips back. Begin to bend the knees and lower the hips down into a squat until the top of the thighs are parallel to the floor. Keep the weight back on the heels so that the knees do not overshoot the toes. Also, remember to keep the chest up tall to prevent too much forward lean in the bottom of the squat. Push the body up through the heels, until the legs are straight and repeat.  Perform 3 sets of 10 repetitions.

Push Ups: This exercise is great for the chest, triceps, shoulders and core muscles. Begin in a straight arm plank with arms shoulder width apart, and the wrists below the shoulders. The feet should be hip to shoulder width apart. Curl the hips under to maintain a flat lower back. Lower the chest to the floor keeping the body in a straight line. To protect the shoulders let the elbows track in closer to the ribs so they point back, not flare out to the sides. If this is too difficult perform a modified push up on the knees. Perform 5 sets of 5 repetitions.

How to Dress Like an American Idol

American Idol Style

When American Idol first debuted, I was 13 years old. That was over 10 years ago! I remember watching the first season with my family, seeing Ryan Seacrest, the host, and Brian Dunkleman, Seacrest’s then co-host, introduce a range of artists, some who would move on to become semifinalists and finalists and others that were… well… just not very good.

At the time of the first season the three judges, Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell, made history with their honest and witty criticism. It was the first time that Americans had seen this type of competition and at the time, there was nothing else like it on Television. It was new and exciting! From the beginning of the auditions to tuning-in and watching the different challenges each week, you would become invested in the competition and its talent.

Like many, I would connect with one of the contestants and root for them each week as if I knew them personally. It’s the same feeling when you’re passionate about a sports team. Each week you tune-in to cheer them on and when they win at the end, go team Kelly Clarkson, you feel like you win too! I think I enjoyed American Idol not just because of the entertainment, although their voices were captivating, and not just because of their journey to success, but in all honesty, the fashionista that I am, it was their sense of fashion that brought me back each week.

I mean, have you watched Idol lately? How amazing does Jennifer Lopez look?! Over the years both the judges and contestants became style icons providing some serious style inspiration for all of us. Here are three of our favorite style icons and tips on how you can dress like an idol.

Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson (American Idol winner, Season 1)

We love Kelly’s rocker sense of style. From day one she blew us away with her bone-chilling vocals. It’s only necessary that she have an eye-catching style to match.

Style Tip: Try adding and mixing textures such as lace, leather and feathers to your outfit. **Pictured above: black leather dress is Free People.

Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood (American Idol winner,  Season 4)

Carrie Underwood is the epitome of “the girl next-door.” This blond bombshell’s style never disappoints (not to mention she has legs for days!)

Style Tip: Less is always more. Wear a simple mini with embellishments paired with a solid clutch and effortless hair is the perfect outfit combination. **Pictured above: Mini embellished dress is ASOS and clutch is anthropologie. Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez (American Idol judge, Seasons 11-12, 13-present)

Not only is she our favorite judge of all time, but JLO gives Idol fashion a whole new meaning. Each week I can’t wait to see what she is wearing. Not only is she 45 years old and looking fabulous, but her style is always on point.

Style Tip: Embrace color and layer. Have fun embracing bright colors. This is especially in this winter and will continue throughout spring. Also, layering a few of your favorite necklaces really can dress up any look. **Pictured above: romper is LuLu’s and layered necklaces are Neiman Marcus.

Thinking back now over all 13 season, yes, 13 seasons! (The 14th season just premiered earlier this month, on January 7th), American Idol is where a lot of superstars were born. Idol helped launch careers from Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks, Jennifer Hudson, Phil Phillips, and Chris Daughtry, to name a few. Truly a bona fide cultural phenomenon! Idol’s alumni have sold more than 60 million albums, have garnered more 250 million downloads and have been certified with 20 Platinum and 13 Gold records; and more than 70 Idol contestants have been on the Billboard charts with 440 songs attaining No.1 Billboard hit status. Idol contestants have conquered Broadway, television and film, and have won numerous awards and accolades, including American Country Music Awards, Country Music Awards, Grammy Awards and an Academy Award. If that’s not superstardom, then I don’t know what is!

Tell me in the comments section below or tweet me @JamieDanno: Who is your all time favorite American Idol? And, what are you looking forward to seeing this season?

Be sure to join me and tune-in Wednesdays and Thursday 8/7 on FOX!

10 Valentine’s Day Date Ideas That Aren’t Cheesy

Instead of going through the motions, go rogue this Valentine’s Day!

10 Valentine's Day Date Ideas That Aren't Cheesy

One might say that Valentine’s Day is the epitome of cheesiness, but naysayers need love too. So go ahead and skip the candlelight dinner, roses and heart-shaped boxes of chocolates, and try one of these cynic-proof Valentine’s Day ideas.

1. Burlesque Show

Spend this Valentine’s Day getting sultry by taking your date to a burlesque show. These old-timey acts are more sexy than skanky (think feather boas, long gloves, fans and tasseled pasties). Talented performers often accompany the campy humor and killer costumes.

2. Indoor Picnic

Skip the restaurant scene, where you’ll inevitably be stuck with an overpriced pre-fixe menu and a seat that leaves you knee-to-knee with other star-crossed lovebirds. Spend your Valentines Day dinner enjoying an indoor picnic instead. Spread out the blanket, break out the fancy accouterments — and don’t forget the bubbly.

3. “Glamping”

Let’s face it: camping isn’t always sexy (bug spray and outdoor toilets can be a romance buzzkill, to say the least). But “glamping” (glamorous camping) can make for the ultimate Valentine’s Day staycation. Pitch a tent (not that kiind) in the backyard or even the bedroom, whip up a batch of s’mores, light up the fireplace (on DVD) and get all cozy in that sleeping bag for deux.

4. Roller Skating

Most dates will be hitting the ice skating rink come Valentine’s Day, so go old school by taking your date roller skating instead. Bust out your tube socks and short shorts — the roller rink makes for a super-fun Valentine’s Day setting. You can hang out in the arcade, buy your date a candy necklace, and get cozy for a couple’s skate.

How to Throw a Single Gals’ Valentine’s Day Party

Get your girlfriends together and make the most of  February 14 by setting up a festive dessert bar.

Kitchen dinner party

So what if you don’t have a sweetheart to celebrate Valentine’s Day with this year? There’s no need to boycott the holiday, wear all black, and give hostile looks to all of the couples you see on February 14.

Take advantage of all that the holiday of love has to offer by throwing yourself and all your single girlfriends a sweet party. Amy Atlas of Amy Atlas Events in New York City has some great ideas for putting together a celebration your friends won’t soon forget. What will be the focal point of your soiree that sets it apart from all the rest? Why, a dessert bar, of course.

When Amy started her boutique firm in 2008, she relied on the unique and fun qualities of a dessert bar to drive her business. “While desserts are the thing that leave guests with their last impression, no one was doing anything special with them,” she says. “I recognized this and started to create stylized dessert bars at my parties.”

Although it takes Amy a week and a team of 4-15 people to conceptualize, build, and decorate her one-of-a-kind dessert bars, yours doesn’t have to be as complicated. Here are some quick and easy steps to pulling off a great (and inexpensive) Valentine’s Day dessert bar:

1. Pick a color scheme.
While an obvious color scheme for Valentine’s Day would be pink, red, and white, you can veer from the traditional colors. Amy finds inspiration in wallpaper patterns, party invitations, or even treasured items that have a special meaning to a client. When you choose a color scheme, make sure you like it – you’ll be basing everything else on this first step.

2. Prepare the goodies.
You can make the dessert items yourself, buy them from the supermarket or bakery, ask your guests to bring some, or do a combination of all three. The key is that each dessert should relate to your theme and reflect your color scheme. For your V-Day bash, Amy suggests mini pink and red cupcakes, pink heart-shaped cookies (this Wilton Red Metal Heart Cookie Cutter from amazon.com, $10.44, will come in handy), pink and red truffles, fluffy strawberry marshmallows, and pink and red candy. The benefit of making items yourself, of course, is that you can decide how cute, detailed, and impressive each dessert will be.
